Everything You Wanted To Know About Chinese Lanterns

Everything You Wanted To Know About Chinese Lanterns

Chinese lanterns have significantly increased in popularity in the West over the past few years. The following guide will look into how they originated, what they symbolise and how they are used. In short, read on to learn the key facts about these beautiful creations.

Origin of Chinese Lanterns
The Chinese lantern was a natural evolution from the simple open flame as a source of lighting – it had high functional value in that it protected the flame inside from being blown out in windy weather, plus it also provided a more even form of illumination than an uncovered flame. While these early forms of Chinese lanterns were initially created for use in the home and as entrance-way illumination, historical experts believe they were quickly put to use as the world’s first portable flashlight.
The experts also believe that in fact the concept of street lighting itself, which later emerged in Europe, originated from European contact with Imperial China, where street lighting had for some time existed.

Uses of Chinese Lanterns
In addition to their functional usefulness as a light source, Chinese lanterns then progressed to becoming an artistic and symbolic expression, as well as an ornamental status symbol. Given the long and much respected Chinese tradition for embellishment, they soon became as lovely in design as they were practical.
Ancient Chinese society was extremely complex, subtle and multi-layered, especially after the introduction of Confucianism. Lantern designers competed among themselves to produce lamp shades of unforgettable beauty. The winners would have the honour of working for the Emperor himself.
Grand celebrations where considered highly important in ancient China and the artistic expression of the individual was considered as something to be harnessed for the common good. One of the main celebrations, still held today, is the Lantern Festival, or in Western terms Little New Year – this commemorates the culmination of the extended Chinese New Year festival.

In contemporary times, Chinese lanterns continue to be used in popular festivals – apart from the Lantern Festival, they are particularly in demand for Lunar New Year and the Mid-Autumn Festival. During these events, the streets in major cities and small towns alike are decorated with red lanterns, which symbolise good fortune and prosperity. The most spectacular displays during these times include Nanjing, Beijing and Hong Kong. Artists still compete with each other for the most impressive lanterns and the winning designs are then copied by every other lamp-shade artisan.

Chinese lanterns are also increasingly used for Western celebrations such as weddings to add attractive appeal to a special occasion.

Conclusion
While Chinese lanterns are of course no longer needed for their functional purpose as a light source, they are as popular as ever in our time for being a symbol of wistful beauty and good luck. These days you can buy them in a range of colours and sizes to suit your preferences.

Depression Treatment Information you Need to Know

Depression Treatment Information you Need to Know

Major depression treatment almost always includes the use of anti depressant medication. However, people should know that this depression treatment does not cure depression. This depression treatment simply works by treating the depression symptoms. Once the depression treatment kicks in and symptoms are under control individuals with depression can begin the work of finding the root of what caused their depression. A great way to do this is through therapy.

Depression treatment with medication does not always work with the first medication that is given. People will have different responses to different medications. There is no magical pill that works for everyone and for each level of depression. What is common about depression treatment that involves the use of medication is that it takes a few weeks for the medication o take effect.

This means the person may not see immediate relief. This is important for people to understand or they may discontinue their depression treatment before it has had a chance to work. If after a few weeks you find that a particular medication is not bringing relief the doctor will either up the dosage or prescribe a different medication. This process can continue until the individual is matched with a medication that works.

There is no way to know which depression treatment medication will work for an individual. It takes experimentation and a lot of patience on the patient’s end. It is important that patients work closely with their physicians until a medication match is found. Remember, using medication as a depression treatment means that moods and feelings will change slowly. However, some symptoms may lessen early on such as improvement in sleeping and eating. Patients who have no relief after taking a medication for six weeks are generally given another medication.

How long a patient stays on a depression treatment medication will depend on the patient. Some patients only have to take a depression treatment for a few months. Other people may have to stay on some form of depression treatment indefinitely. Patients who have to stay on a depression treatment medication for a long time need to be matched with a medication that has little or no long term side effects.

If you are experiencing depression and avoiding depression treatment you should be very careful. Depression can plunge you into a host of intense emotions. They can range from sadness, exhaustion, worthlessness, hopelessness and helplessness. Without depression treatment these negative thoughts can spiral out of control.

Without depression treatment you may never be able to view life clearly again. You do not have to live with depression. Depression treatment is available. If you do not want to start out taking a depression treatment medication you may benefit from therapy alone. The first step is seeking help. Seeking help is sometimes hard when you are depressed. If this sounds like you, talk to a trusted friend or family member and see if they will help you find the depression treatment that you need.

Gas Fireplace – Things to Know About

Gas Fireplace – Things to Know About

Gas Fireplace – Things to Know About

A gas fireplace is mostly a firebox with a glass face to see the fire. Most of the designs of gas fireplaces are made per specifications provided by the customer. These fireplaces have ducts that help with even distribution of the heat to different corners of the room. This allows for your fireplace to not only work more efficiently, but it leads to maximum utilization of heat and less waste of gas.

Whether it is a gas or a direct vent fireplace, both have a sealed combustion chamber for the release of emissions through the chimney or vent. A gas fireplace in Atlanta has many advantages being that it’s convenient and ignites at the press of the switch. A new range of natural gas fireplaces is getting increasingly popular amongst buyers in the market.

These fireplaces keep the house clean and produce less pollution in comparison to the wood-burning fires. A high quality natural gas fireplace in Atlanta heats up to 1,000 square feet of living space efficiently and turns out to be the most cost-effective fireplace option.

Most of us think that revamping the whole hearth is the only option left after picking out the fireplace mantel. But, you can also give your fireplace a new look by installing a gas electric fireplace that has following pros and cons:

Positives of a Gas Fireplace

Gas Fireplace has many benefits like:

• It is reliable and easy to control. Nowadays, gas fireplaces with a remote and a single button allow for easy, hassle-free operation. There are also fireplaces fitted with timers, so that one can control the total time for which the fire should burn.

• Most of the gas fireplaces can be easily inserted and fitted into the old firebox. If you are going for an un-vented gas fireplace, it won’t require a chimney. A vented gas fireplace needs a chimney so that waste product is immediately expelled out.

• With a gas fireplace, 70% of the heat remains in house instead of being lost in the atmosphere.

• When you are using gas fireplace, no time is wasted in building a fire or cleaning the ash later.

Negatives of a Gas Fireplace

Undoubtedly, a gas fireplace is a great addition to your home, but there area few things to consider:

• If you are buying an un-vented gas fireplace, you should know that it has oxygen depletion sensors for turning the gas off if the carbon monoxide level increases. You might be required to install additional carbon monoxide detectors in your home as an extra precaution.

• You can not get the authentic crackle and smell of the burning wood in the fireplace.

• Because the un-vented gas fireplace is hot as the natural gas burning inside it, you have to take extra precautions if there are children or pets in your home.

• A gas fireplace creates extra moisture because water is a byproduct of combustion of a gas fireplace.

Roller Banners – Know The Difference

Roller Banner Stand
by wallyg

Roller Banners – Know The Difference

There are many different models of roller banner stand available, but do you know the difference? What are the advantages of choosing one stand over another? Costs can vary immensely when you are shopping for roller banners so you will need to decide which one is best for your requirements. What are the differences that advocate buying one display stand costing £99 while another stand can cost over £300? Here are the fundamentals.

Media & Print

The media that a banner stand graphic is printed onto is a main issue that dictates the ultimate cost to the purchaser. There are various types of material that can be used, each suitable for a different purpose. Economy banner stands are usually printed either onto thick paper then overlaminated, or onto outdoor banner material using a solvent based printer. A paper print should have a fairly high print resolution with vivid, sharp graphics, but paper printed banners tend to tear very easily, even when overlaminated. These are really only usable for non-permanent use and will not last for more than a handful of uses, if that. PVC outdoor banner graphics are durable yet prone to coming apart at the edges. The print is also usually of a lower grade than a standard wide format professional printer. The ideal media for a banner stand is a dedicated inkjet banner media that is damage resistant and will give a vivid, high contrast image when used. This will then require laminating to give additional protection against damage.

Recoil & Casing

The banner stand recoil and casing are also major factors in the cost of a stand. There are various companies which are dedicated to manufacturing exhibition stands, many from China, Europe, and also the United Kindom. Stands made in China are mostly mass produced and may be manufactured to a lesser standard than European or UK stands. This will be reflected in the cost that you ultimately pay for the stand. The aluminium that is used may be lighter and the stand less sturdy when it is assembled. These displays rarely last more than a few shows without a technical problem but they are usually the least expensive available.

If you need a quality made banner stand then British brands are recommended. These displays stick to tighter standards of manufacture and should come with a warranty on the hardware. A good way to ensure your display is a well made product is to ask your supplier whether it comes with a warranty. The best stands come with a ten year guarantee on hardware. Quality UK manufacturers to look out for include Ultima, Plex and Easystands among others. These companies deal directly with suppliers so you will have to find one that has good customer service and can provide these stands at a price that is affordable.

Requirements

In the end, the stand you select will be determined by your requirements. For example, if you need a display for only a single exhibition and you simply need a banner to add a some interest to your display at a low price, then an economy banner stand may be your best bet. However, if you need a stand that is sturdy that will wow potential customers and is suitable for repeat use, then a more expensive, better quality display is called for.

I Need a New Boiler. What do i need to know

I Need a New Boiler. What do i need to know

If you have ever need to upgrade your boiler you will know what a nightmare it can be having to choose what  New Boiler you need for your home.  What brand do I need?  Where should I put it?  How long will it last?  The questions are almost as serious as buying a new car or buying a home.  Purchasing a new boiler is after all a capital purchase, and serious consideration needs to be given in selecting the right brand and where it is going to be sighted.  Kitchen, Bedroom, or Loft, there are loads of spin off questions that come from the need for a new boiler.  First of all don’t worry,  there are hundreds of heating engineers that are highly qualified that can help you with your problem and if you are cold and have no hot water, dont get forced into decisions without assessing the options first. The old saying react in haste repent in lesiure is a true statement when choosing and installing a new boiler.

There are normally two types of customer that we come accross that need a new boiler.  1. Customers that need to have a boiler installed yesterday.  2. The customer thats planned their installation carefully because they know that there old boiler has been costing allot of money to run.

In both cases the questions will start to come and go .  So firstly get a pen and a piece of paper and write down what questions arise,  that way when you need to remember them, you have a record of your thoughts to dicuss with your installer.

There are considerations that you need to think about and there are some things that are taken out of customers hands due to Building regulation compliance ,so ill try to be brief so you can get an idea of what things customers can focus on to discuss.

Its important to identify what system you have!

Do I have a hot water cylinder?
Do I have Tanks in the loft, and how many tanks there are?
Do I have a room thermostat?
Do I have a programmer?
Do I have Thermostatic radiator valves?
Do I have a power shower

By finding out the answers to the above questions will help simplify what you need to discuss with your installer  Remember The size of your house is a large consideration when you have a property that is larger than three bedrroms. Purely because normally a 3-4 bed house starts to have other bathrooms and en suits,  more hot water taps than are found in a 2-3 bed home. thus the need for a larger volume of water being supplied to the hot taps. to avoid flow reduction if multiple taps are turned on.

Hot Water Cylinders.
If you have a cylinder in your home you will either have a fully pumped or gravity system an S-plan or C-plan system installed.
Here we go you may think?,  Not so.  If you have a cylinder in your home and its a three bedrromed house then 90% of our customers opt to have a Combination boiler installed in their home (On the whole they are far more efficient).  Its normally being upgraded from either of the systems that i mentioned above. So try to relax and discuss with your installer what you think you need.  He will explain what system you have when he call to give you a quote and survey your home.

Tanks in the loft.
If you have tanks in the loft or above your boiler and system, you have a few considerations for them.  Any exposed tank ie a tank without a sealed lid on it has to be upgraded so that it is sealed,  Galvanised tanks have to be removed so check what type of tank you have .  You have to have whats called a By law 30 kit to both tanks installed so if your opting to keep your existing system design and just get your boiler upgraded then water by laws state to all installers that this has to be done.

Room Thermostats.
You may have a room thermostat in your home thats been installed with your central heating system, or you may have had it installed after an old one has broken down.  You may not have one at all.  If you are thinking of just upgrading your old boiler again you have to consider a room thermostat.  Under current building regulations your new boiler has to have whats called a boiler interlock.  That is the control of heat by a combination of room thermostat and thermostatic radiator valve controls.  Your installer will tell you more about this but if you have not got them,  you will need to have them installed so that you system conforms to current building regulations.   Having them installed will help save huge amounts of gas and reduce that monthly gas bill considerably.

Thermostatic radiator valves.
Thermostatic radiator valves come in many shapes and orientations but the most common feature is a control that regulates the temprature of the heat that is in the room.  either by detecting the radiator panel temprature or the ambient temprature of the room the radiator is installed in.  As i explained in room thermostats these are mandatory if your system does not have them and they will help save you around £300.00 in gas anually.

Do i have a Power Shower.
This is where carefull consideration needs to be given.  If you are in a 2-3 bed house and you have a power shower and think.  I can not have a combination boiler because i have that type of shower you would be wrong.  Combination boilers come with many different flow rates some offer up to 19.1 ltrs a minute and still provide enough heat for the heating system and hot water.  With a combined incoming cold mains flow and the hot water flow  you should experience a combined flow rate through your shower in excess of 24 ltrs per minute.  You will find that your shower pump provides water flow rates of around this mark,  so upgrading your system to a combination boiler (certain checks have been made) could still provide the hot water you need for your shower to operate without the noise and electricity from the pump.

Will it be Combination or System Boiler

This is the inside of a normal system boiler.  All of its main controls are on the panel at the front of the boiler and its system controls are ouside the boiler.

Because of building regulations you would have to have installed with this boiler the following from the top of your system to the bottom:

Upgrade tanks and By Law 30 kits.**
Install 3 port valve kit or S-Plan System.**
Upgrade old cylinder.
Re Orientate existing pipework.**
Install Room Thermostats.**
Install Thermostaatic Radiator Valves.**
Upgrade Gas pipe to boiler ( Not in all cases)
Install condensate pipework from new boiler to drain**
Install flue basket If situated below 1.8m outside.**
Exterior components not under Manufacturer guarantee.

This is the inside of a combination boiler, you will have noticed from the picture

above that all of its controls are outside the boiler but on this boiler all of the controls are on the inside there are only a few considerations that we need to take into consideration to have one of these installed

Gas Supply needs upgrading
Install condensate pipework from new boiler to drain.**
Install room thermostat.**
Install Thermostatic Radiator Valves.**
Remove excess pipework and seal system.*
Can Be re sighted easily.
More flueing options.
Higher combined efficiency.
All components under  manufacturer guarantee.

Choosing controls that are Effective and look ok too.

Installing efficient controls that are not only effective but pleasing to the eye are the best controls that you can choose.  If you are spending the time to have your system upgraded then its common sense to choose something thats not an eye sore.  some controls such as this Easy stat from Alpha have a radio device on the left of the picture that fits neatly into the boller .  It communicates with the Easy stat by radio frequency and it can be sited up to 60 meters away from the boiler, it operates through walls and does not need line of site to work.  When having a thermostat like this installed meens less wiring.  Means less over all cost.

The Costs.

The cost of a new replacement system boiler taking into consideration the nessacery upgrades that have to be done are between £2100.00 – £4000.00 depending on the upgrades that need to be applied,  if you are lucky and you have all the controls that are needed to comply with building regulations then you could expect your system to be installed for under £2000.00  obviously prices will differ depending on when and who you get to install it.  Be sure of one thing whoever you get to install it.  They have to be Gas Safe Registered and they have to have part L for registering there appliance with your local building regulation department.  If they are not registered part L compliant then expect to get a bull from building control for around £200.00 for registering your product.

A combination system up to around 35KW fully installed is around £2000.00 – £3600.00 depending on flue type and control set.  these systems are far more efficient so you will recover installation costs alltot quicker than you would a system boiler.  guarantees range from 3,5 and 10 years with the prices given above and all the boilers have to have a Gas Safe Registered engineer to install them again they also need top be Part L compliant.

What You Need to Know About Party Wall Matters

What You Need to Know About Party Wall Matters

What do you need to know about party wall matters? That depends… how much of a glutton for punishment are you? If you intend to tackle a construction project that involves a party wall matter by yourself, then what you’ll definitely need to know plenty about the complicated world of party wall matters. You can start with a free copy of the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister’s handy 22-page Explanatory Booklet that we can provide you with a link to. But even that, as the booklet will tell you, is “not an authoritative interpretation of the law.” You’ll have to keep researching all the myriad details of your particular situation. For most people, this does not strike them as fun at all. And if you’ll likely ever do but one or two projects involving a party wall matter, then the huge investment of your time required to master the various regulations is probably not worth it. In any case, you (as the Building Owner ) cannot act as a Surveyor. You can serve the Notices but if the Adjoinming Owner dissents / disagrees then you will have to appoint a Surveyor in any case. But you can avoid much of the hassle by hiring a professional party wall surveyor at the outset and authorising them to act on your behalf throughout the entire process.

Whilst you can serve Notices, if they are not properly written and served then they could be invalid and all procedures that follow are null & void – you go back to square one.

Party Wall Matters

Anyone who carries out certain work involving a party wall, construction on a boundary or excavation for foundations close to an adjoining building anywhere in England and Wales is likely to need to consider the requirements of the Party Wall Etc Act of 1996. One of the most important requirements of the Party Wall Etc Act 1996 is that you must give notice to all Adjoining Owners, even if your construction work does not extend beyond the centre line of the Party wall. That is very important to note: even if you didn’t think you’re affected by the Act because all your construction appears to take place upon your property… you still possibly are. And once your neighbours are legally informed that you are carrying out work that could potentially affect their structure and property, they’re also going to feel much better about your project (and likely refrain from causing you potential delays) if they see that you have entrusted the Party Wall matters to a professional firm of Party wall surveyors.

The Party Wall Surveyor

London Party Wall Surveyors can assist you with your project from start to finish. We’ll perform the initial research to determine your specific job needs and give you a written estimate of costs. Know Your Way Around Engineered Wood Flooring

Know Your Way Around Engineered Wood Flooring

Often confused with laminate, vinyl, or veneer flooring, engineered wood flooring is currently one of the most popular solutions for consumers seeking wood flooring in their home. In contrast to laminate and vinyl, engineered wood flooring actually comprises of two or more layers of real wood, with the top layer being the visible material, and the bottom layer providing the stability and support. Engineered wood flooring has grown enormously in popularity due to being typically cheaper to purchase and install than solid wood flooring, whilst maintaining an almost identical quality and feel.

One consideration to make when considering purchasing engineered wood flooring is that it is not suitable for installation in bathrooms or utility areas due to the heavy amount of moisture that the flooring would be subject to. It is however, easy to install using either a click, or a tongue in groove system, and nowadays is available in many different high-quality styles and grades.

Before you purchase your engineered wood flooring solution, there are a number of useful things to consider. First of all, a very important consideration to make is the grade that the flooring is given by its manufacturers. The grade refers to the quality of the wood throughout its layers. For example, a board awarded the grade of AB will typically have a top layer of top quality wood (A grade), which is visible to the user, and a slightly lesser quality layer (B grade) which will provide stability to the plank and not be visible to the consumer. Generally speaking, grade A – the highest grade – should be defect-free, or as close to it as possible, and any splits or small knots in the wood should be plugged or repaired with synthetic filler. As you progress through the grades of engineered wood flooring (the lowest being D), the quality will reduce somewhat, and the number of natural knots, splits and colour variations will increase. A ‘D grade’ board will most likely not have had any repairs or sanding done to it, as is considered as more suitable for back surfaces that are not visible.

Also important to consider when purchasing engineered wood flooring is the board size and the type of finish applied to the wood. Board sizes can vary significantly, and can make a big difference for some who is looking for a ‘chunkier’ aesthetic, or on the other extreme, for someone seeking a finer, more tailored look to their flooring. Be sure to take into account the board size and the quantity of boards in a pack when you come to choosing a type, since this will affect the overall price of the project. It is easily to think a certain board is better value per-pack without realising that it is considerably narrower and that each pack contains fewer boards, which would then necessitate more packs to cover your area.

Equally, when choosing a finish for your engineered wood flooring, make sure to choose carefully so that you are not disappointed by the result, and you achieve the look you are going for. Popular finishes include ‘Clear UV Lacquered’, ‘Handscraped’, and ‘Stained’, and are fairly self-explanatory in their respective qualities. A handscraped board will offer more of a rustic, natural quality, while a clear UV lacquer will provide a more modern, light feel. Choosing a finish goes hand-in-hand with choosing a décor style for your flooring, and both options should complement the other. As well as differing types of wood offering differing colour tones and grains, also bear in mind that different types of wood may be considered stronger or possess different qualities than others. Some of the most popular types of wood used in engineered wood flooring include oak, bamboo, walnut, ash and beech.

Topps Tile’s offers a wide range of high-quality engineered wood flooring, and offer expert advice on how to install and maintain your floor.
